Today marks a couple of big events for us in the pregnancy. First, today marks the official start of the third trimester!! We're in the home stretch now! The second event was our third sonogram. The sonogram went pretty well. Everything with Caitlin's growth looks great and there are no signs of any problems. Her heartbeat was cruising along at about 140 today and sounded very strong. Since our last sonogram, Caitlin has actually doubled in weight! Her size and weight are perfect and her development looks great so we were both very happy with that news. The sonogram technician was extremely patient and even spent quite a bit of time trying to get Caitlin to move around for us but Caitlin seemed to prefer sleeping this week to putting on a show for us. Try as we might, we couldn't get Caitlin to do much more than stick her tongue out. :) We tried everything from talking to her, to playing music that usually gets her moving and nothing worked. Usually playing either "Calling You" by Blue October or "See You Again" by Miley Cyrus will get Caitlin moving but today, she seemed more interested in sleeping. :)
We did get some news that is cause for concern today. While the placenta has moved to where it should be (good thing), there is a major blood vessel attached to it that has not and is still too low in the uterus (bad thing). The problem this presents is that if it stays where it is, it could cause excessive bleeding during delivery. If the situation remains the same, we're definitely looking at a C-section. Toni also has to be very careful from this point on not to cause any strain on her uterus so she won't be doing any lifting or anything like that for the rest of the pregnancy. They want to see her again on May 22nd and at that time, they will decide if she is medically alright to go on her trip to Washington DC.
As for the sonogram itself, the image quality is degrading the larger Caitlin gets but we still got a VHS tape and will put together a DVD of both visits very soon. If you would like a copy, let one of us know. We also spoke with the Doctor to get her take on the 3D and 4D sonograms. She told us that while there's very little risk to the baby, it's not something she suggests to her patients. The image is dependent on the position of the baby (Caitlin would not have been in the right position today) and the cost is hard to justify when the baby will be here in a few months and you can get better pictures for a lot less money. While the 4D sonogram might be a cool thing to have, right now we're leaning toward not doing it. Caitlin will be here in less than 3 months and we can get a lot of pictures of her then.
The nursery is nearly complete. I spent last night working on the window and got the remainder of the chair rail up. I still need to add a cap to the top of the window, do the crown molding and touch up nail holes and paint a little and the room will be ready to go! :) I'll get some pics up as soon as I finish it. :)
